पत्नी स्वर्ग का साधन है

कश्यपस्मृति में कहा गया है, दाराधीना क्रियाः स्वर्गस्य साधनम्। तीर्थयात्रा, दान, श्राद्धादि जितने भी सत्कर्म हैं, वे सभी पत्नी के अधीन हैं। अतः पत्नी स्वर्ग का साधन है। यह भी कहा गया है कि नास्ति भार्यासमं तीर्थम् अर्थात् पत्नी साक्षात् तीर्थ है।

स्वामी सत्यमित्रानंदगिरिजी धर्म प्रचार के लिए अमेरिका गए, तो एक अमेरिकी ने उनसे पूछा, ‘क्या भारत में पति की मृत्यु होने पर पत्नी को जला डालने की क्रूर परंपरा अभी तक जीवित है ।’

स्वामीजी ने कहा, ‘भारत में कभी नारी को विलासिता का साधन नहीं माना गया। धर्मशास्त्रों में कहा गया है कि यत्र नार्यस्तु पूज्यन्ते रमन्ते तत्र देवता, अर्थात् जहाँ नारी की पूजा होती है, वहाँ देवताओं की कृपा बसती है।

उन्होंने आगे कहा, ‘समय-समय पर अगर कुछ स्वार्थी धूर्तों ने संपत्ति आदि के लालच में पति की मृत्यु के बाद पत्नी को जला डाला, तो उसे घोर अधर्म ही कहा जाएगा। उसे प्रथा बताकर भारत के विरुद्ध दुष्प्रचार करना कुटिलता है।’

आध्यात्मिक विभूति हनुमानप्रसाद पोद्दार ने स्त्रियों को भोग का साधन समझने वालों को घोर अधर्मी बताते हुए लिखा, ‘स्त्री को सहभागी बनाए बिना कोई भी सत्कर्म सफल नहीं हो सकता। ‘

पुराण में एक राजा की कथा आती है। उसने जीवन में अनेक पुण्य कर्म किए, लेकिन एक बार अपनी पत्नी का अपमान कर दिया। इससे उसके अन्य सत्कर्मों के पुण्य क्षीण हो गए।

कृकाल नामक गृहस्थ पत्नी की सहमति के बिना अकेला तीर्थयात्रा को चला गया। उसने तीर्थ में जो-जो सत्कर्म किए, वे निष्फल हो गए।

English Translation

In the Kashyapasmriti it is said, daradhin kriyah swargasya sadhanam. All the good deeds, pilgrimage, charity, Shraddha etc., are all under the wife. Therefore the wife is the instrument of heaven. It is also said that nasti bharyasam tirtam i.e. the wife is the real tirtha.

When Swami Satyamitranandgiriji went to America for preaching religion, an American asked him, ‘Is the cruel tradition of burning the wife still alive in India after the death of her husband.’

Swamiji said, ‘Never in India women were considered a means of luxury. It is said in the scriptures that Yatra Naryastu Pujyante Ramante Tatra Devata, that is, where women are worshipped, the grace of the gods resides there.

He further said, ‘From time to time if some selfish rascals have burnt the wife after the death of the husband in the greed of property etc., then that would be called a gross adharma. It is crooked to spread propaganda against India by calling it a custom.

Describing those who consider women as the means of enjoyment, the spiritual legend Hanumanprasad Poddar wrote, ‘No good work can be successful without making a woman a participant. ‘

There is a story of a king in the Puranas. He did many virtuous deeds in life, but once insulted his wife. Due to this the virtues of his other good deeds were attenuated.

A householder named Krikal went on a pilgrimage alone without the consent of his wife. All the good deeds he performed in the pilgrimage became fruitless.
