सबसे अच्छा गुण

भगवान् श्रीराम समय-समय पर अपने गुरुदेव वशिष्ठजी के आश्रम में जाकर उनका सत्संग किया करते थे । एक दिन सत्पुरुषों के सत्संग के महत्त्व पर प्रकाश डालते हुए महर्षि वशिष्ठजी ने कहा, ‘रघुकुल भूषण राम! जिस प्रकार दीपक अंधकार का नाश करता है,

उसी प्रकार विवेक ज्ञान संपन्न महापुरुष हृदय स्थित अज्ञानरूपी अंधकार को सहज ही में हटा देने में सक्षम होते हैं। इसलिए सभी धर्मग्रंथों में प्रतिदिन किसी-न- किसी सत्पुरुष के सत्संग तथा शास्त्रों के स्वाध्याय पर बल दिया गया है।’

महर्षि वशिष्ठ ने अपने शिष्य श्रीराम से आगे कहा, ‘विवेकी महापुरुष इंद्रियनिग्रही, परम विरक्त तथा हर क्षण ब्रह्म का चिंतन करने वाले होते हैं। जिनमें तमोगुण का सर्वथा अभाव है, जो रजोगुण से रहित हैं, जिनमें संसार के प्रति वैराग्य सुदृढ़ हो जाता है,

ऐसे सत्पुरुषों का सान्निध्य बड़े भाग्य और पुण्य से प्राप्त होता है। उनका सान्निध्य पाते ही सभी सांसारिक भोगों की तृष्णा नष्ट हो जाती है। आनंदस्वरूप आत्मा की अनुभूति हो जाने से साधक धन-संपत्ति, भोग-वैभव त्याग देने को सहज ही तत्पर हो जाता है।

श्रीराम ने पूछा, ‘गुरुवर, ऐसे महापुरुष का सर्वोत्कृष्ट गुण क्या होता है? वशिष्ठ बताते हैं, ‘उसका नाम है, विवेक। विवेक अधिकारी पुरुष की हृदयरूपी गुफा में ऐसे स्थित हो जाता है, जैसे निर्मल आकाश में चंद्रमा। विवेक ही वासनायुक्त अज्ञानी जीव को ज्ञान प्रदान करता है।

ज्ञानस्वरूप आत्मा ही सबसे बड़ा परमेश्वर है। ज्ञानरूपी चिदात्म सूर्य का उदय होते ही संसाररूपी रात्रि में विचरता हुआ मनरूपी पिशाच नष्ट हो जाता है।’

English Translation

From time to time, Lord Shri Ram used to visit his Gurudev Vashishtji’s ashram and satsang him. One day, while highlighting the importance of the satsang of the saints, Maharishi Vashistha said, ‘Raghukul Bhushan Ram! As the lamp destroys the darkness,

In the same way, great men with wisdom and knowledge are able to easily remove the darkness of ignorance in the heart. That is why in all the scriptures, emphasis has been laid on the daily satsang of one or the other Satpurush and self-study of the scriptures.

Maharishi Vashishtha further said to his disciple Shri Ram, ‘The wise great men are the senses, the supremely detached and the one who contemplates the Brahman at every moment. Those who are utterly lacking in the guna of tamo, who are devoid of the guna of rajo, in whom disinterest in the world becomes strong,

The company of such virtuous persons is attained by great fortune and virtue. The craving for all worldly pleasures vanishes as soon as he is near them. By having the experience of the soul as bliss, the seeker becomes easily ready to renounce wealth, property, enjoyment and splendor.

Shri Ram asked, ‘Teacher, what is the best quality of such a great man? Vashishtha says, ‘His name is Vivek. The wisdom becomes situated in the cave of the possessor’s heart, like the moon in the clear sky. It is the conscience that imparts knowledge to the lustful ignorant creature.

The soul in the form of knowledge is the greatest God. As soon as the sun, the mind of the mind of knowledge, wanders in the night of the world, the vampire of the mind is destroyed.
