सेवा-परोपकार सर्वोपरि

भारतीय संस्कृति मानवता और सहिष्णुता का संदेश देती रही है । कहा गया है, ‘एक सत् विप्रा बहुधा वदंति’ यानी उपासना के सभी मार्ग अंततः चरम सत्य तक ही पहुँचाते हैं।

आयरलैंड में जन्मी मार्गरेट नोबल नामक युवती ने स्वामी विवेकानंद के उपदेशों से प्रभावित होकर अपना सर्वस्व भारत व भारतीय संस्कृति की सेवा के लिए समर्पित कर दिया था।

स्वामी विवेकानंद से दीक्षा लेकर वे भगिनी निवेदिता बन गईं। एक दिन उन्हें वेदों व गीता के महत्त्व पर प्रवचन देते देख एक अंग्रेज ने कहा, ‘अपने ईसाई धर्म की जगह तुम भारतीय धर्म में क्या विशेषता देखती हो?’

भगिनी निवेदिता ने विनम्रता से कहा, ‘मुझे भारतीय धर्मशास्त्रों के इस सार ने प्रभावित किया है कि सत्यरूपी धर्म का साक्षात्कार किसी भी उपासना पद्धति के माध्यम से किया जा सकता है।

आत्म साक्षात्कार किसी भी धर्म, पंथ या जाति के व्यक्ति का मौलिक अधिकार है। निवेदिता ने लिखा है, ‘सत्य का साक्षात्कार केवल हमारे मार्ग से ही होगा, ऐसा समझना अहंकार होगा जिस प्रकार नदियाँ विभिन्न स्थानों से निकलते हुए सागर में पहुँचती हैं,

उसी प्रकार विभिन्न पूजा-उपासना पद्धतियाँ भी ईश्वर और सत्य तक ले जाती हैं। इसलिए किसी व्यक्ति को असहिष्णु होकर अपने ही धार्मिक मार्ग पर चलने का दुराग्रह नहीं करना चाहिए। यह दुराग्रह ही आत्मा-परमात्मा का रहस्य समझने में बाधक बनता है।

भगिनी निवेदिता हमेशा कहा करती थीं, ‘सेवा परोपकार को सर्वोपरि धर्म मानने वाला भारत का सनातन धर्म ही विश्व को शांति व मानवता का संदेश देने में सक्षम है।

English Translation

Indian culture has been giving the message of humanity and tolerance. It has been said, ‘Ek sat vipra bahudha vadanti’ i.e. all paths of worship ultimately lead to the ultimate truth.

Born in Ireland, a young woman named Margaret Noble, influenced by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, devoted her life to the service of India and Indian culture.

She became sister Nivedita after taking initiation from Swami Vivekananda. One day, seeing him giving a discourse on the importance of Vedas and Gita, an Englishman said, ‘What specialty do you see in Indian religion instead of your Christian religion?’

Sister Nivedita said humbly, ‘I am impressed by the essence of Indian theology that the true form of Dharma can be realized through any form of worship.

Self realization is a fundamental right of a person belonging to any religion, creed or caste. Nivedita has written, ‘Truth will be realized only through our path, it would be arrogant to understand that as rivers coming out of different places reach the ocean,

Similarly, different worship-worship systems also lead to God and truth. Therefore, a person should not be intolerant to follow his own religious path. It is this prejudice that becomes a hindrance in understanding the mystery of the soul and the Supreme Soul.

Sister Nivedita always used to say, ‘The Sanatan Dharma of India, which considers service and charity as the paramount religion, is capable of giving the message of peace and humanity to the world.
