बनारस कहें या काशी यहां के काशी हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय की स्थापना के कुछ ही समय बाद की बात है। कभी-कभी जब अध्यापक उद्दंड छात्रों को उनकी गलतियों के लिए आर्थिक दंड दे दिया करते थे।

मगर छात्र दंड माफ कराने मदन मोहन मालवीय जी के पास पहुंच जाते और महामना माफ भी कर देते थे। यह बात शिक्षकों को अच्छी नहीं लगती थी।

एक बार वे मालवीय जी के पास जाकर बोले, ‘महामना, आप उद्दंड छात्रों का आर्थिक दंड माफ कर उनका मनोबल बढ़ा रहे हैं। इससे उनमें अनुशासनहीनता को बढ़ावा मिल रहा है। आप अनुशासन बनाए रखने के लिए उनके दंड माफ न करें।’

मालवीय जी ने शिक्षकों की बातें ध्यान से सुनीं फिर बोले, ‘मित्रो, जब मैं प्रथम वर्ष का छात्र था तो एक दिन गंदे कपड़े पहनने के कारण मुझ पर छह पैसे का अर्थ दंड लगाया गया था। आप सोचिए, उन दिनों मुझ जैसे छात्रों के पास दो पैसे साबुन के लिए नहीं होते थे तो दंड देने के लिए छह पैसे कहां से लाता।

इस दंड की पूर्ति किस प्रकार की, यह याद करते हुए मेरे हाथ स्वतः छात्रों के प्रार्थना पत्र पर क्षमा लिख देते हैं।’ यह सुनकर वे शिक्षक निरुत्तर हो गए।

एक बार महामना छात्रावास का निरीक्षण कर रहे थे तभी उन्होंने देखा कि एक छात्र दीवार के कोने में कुछ लिख रहा है। मालवीय जी ने उसे समझाया,’ मेरे दिल में तुम्हारे प्रति जितनी ममता और लगाव है, उतना ही प्रेम विश्वविद्यालय की प्रत्येक ईंट से भी है। आशा है, भविष्य में तुम ऐसी गलती फिर न करोगे।’

फिर महामना ने जेब से रूमाल निकालकर दीवार को साफ कर दिया। यह देखकर छात्र का सिर लज्जा से झुक गया।
