सत्य और सुख

खलील जिब्रान से किसी ने पूछा, ‘आज दानवता, हिंसा और अनैतिकता का बोलबाला क्यों हो रहा है?

जिब्रान ने उसे बताया, ‘ईश्वर ने जब आदमी को दुनिया में भेजा, तो उसके दोनों हाथों में एक-एक घड़ा थमा दिया था। परमात्मा ने उससे कहा, एक घड़े में सत्य भरा है, जिसका पालन कल्याणकारी होगा।

दूसरे घड़े में सुख है, जो विषय-वासना की चाह पैदा करता है। तुम जगत् में जा रहे हो, जहाँ शैतान (अज्ञान) व माया (अविद्या) का राज्य है। प्राण देकर भी सत्य की रक्षा करना, उसे ज्यों-का-त्यों सुरक्षित रखना।

सुख की कामना सीमित रखना। यह मत भूलना कि तुम्हारे दाहिने हाथ में सत्य का घड़ा है और बाएँ हाथ में सुख का।’इनसान दोनों घड़े लेकर चला। रास्ते में उसे थकावट महसूस हुई।

वह पेड़ की छाया में बैठा, तो नींद आ गई। शैतान ने चुपचाप परमात्मा की हिदायत सुन ली थी, वह भी इनसान का पीछा कर रहा था। इनसान को सोता देख उसने चुपचाप दाएँ हाथ का घड़ा बाएँ हाथ में और बाएँ हाथ का घड़ा दाएँ हाथ में रख दिया और गायब हो गया।

इनसान भ्रम में पड़कर सत्य को व्यर्थ समझकर बेरहमी से लुटाने लगा । देखते-ही-देखते सत्य-शील का खजाना पूरी तरह खाली हो गया। उसके पास केवल सुख-सुविधाएँ और कामनाएँ ही रह गईं। इसी कारण संसार में दानवता, हिंसा और कूररता का बोलबाला दिखाई देता है।’

खलील जिब्रान ने बताया, ‘जो व्यक्ति सत्य-शील का त्याग कर देता है, उससे इनसानियत स्वतः दूर हो जाती है। वह भोग-विलास व अन्य दुर्व्यसनों में फँसकर अपना और दूसरों का जीवन कष्टमय बनाने में लगा रहता है।

English Translation

Someone asked Khalil Gibran, ‘Why are demons, violence and immorality prevailing today?

Gibran told him, ‘When God sent the man into the world, he had given a pot each in both his hands. God said to him, a pot is filled with truth, whose maintenance will be beneficial.

In the second pitcher there is happiness, which creates desire for lust. You are going into the world, where Satan (ignorance) and Maya (Avidya) reign. To protect the truth even by giving life, to keep it safe as it is.

Limit the desire for happiness. Do not forget that in your right hand there is a pot of truth and in your left hand a pot of happiness. The man walked with both the pots. On the way he felt tired.

When he sat in the shade of the tree, he fell asleep. Satan had silently listened to the instructions of God, he too was following the man. Seeing the man sleeping, he quietly put the right hand pot in the left hand and the left hand pot in the right hand and disappeared.

The man was delusional and started ruthlessly looting the truth considering it to be futile. Suddenly, the treasure of truthfulness became completely empty. He was left with only pleasures and desires. This is the reason why demons, violence and cruelty prevail in the world.

Khalil Gibran said, “Humanity automatically goes away from a person who renounces truthfulness. He keeps busy in making his life and the lives of others miserable by getting trapped in indulgences and other intoxicants.
