संत तिरुवल्लुवर एक बार अपने शिष्यों के साथ कहीं चले जा रहे थे। रास्ते में आने-जाने वाले लोग उनका अभिवादन कर रहे थे। तभी अचानक,एक शराबी झूमता हुआ उनके सामने आया और तनकर खड़ा हो गया।

उसने संत तिरुवल्लुवर से कहा, ‘आप लोगों से यह क्यों कहते हैं कि शराब घृणित चीज है, मत पिया करो। क्या अंगूर खराब होते हैं, क्या चावल बुरी चीज है? अगर ये दोनों चीजें अच्छी हैं तो इनसे बनने वाली शराब कैसे बुरी हो गई? ‘

लोग हैरत से देखने लगे कि संत तिरुवल्लुवर इस पर क्या जवाब देते हैं। संत मुस्कराकर बोले, ‘भाई, अगर तुम पर मुट्ठी भरकर कोई मिट्टी फेंके या कटोरा भर कर पानी डाल दे तो क्या इससे तुम्हें चोट लगेगी ?

शराबी ने ना में सिर हिलाया तो संत ने फिर कहा, लेकिन इसी मिट्टी में पानी मिलाकर उसकी ईंट बनाकर तुम पर फेंकी जाए तब ? शराबी बोला, जाहिर सी बात है , उससे तो मैं घायल हो जाऊंगा।

संत तिरुवल्लुवर ने शराबी को फिर समझाते हुए कहा, तो भाई, जब मिट्टी में पानी मिलाकर उसकी ईंट बनाकर तुम पर फेंकी जाए तब तुम उससे घायल हो जाओगे, इसी प्रकार अंगूर और चावल भी अपने आप में बुरे नहीं हैं, मगर यदि इन्हें मिलाकर शराब बनाकर सेवन किया जाए तो यह मनुष्य के लिए नुकसानदेह है।

यह स्वास्थ्य को खराब करती है। इससे व्यक्ति की सोचने की क्षमता पर बुरा असर पड़ता है। इसके कारण तो परिवार नष्ट हो जाते हैं। संत की इस बात का उस शराबी पर गहरा असर पड़ा और उसने उस दिन से शराब नहीं पी।

Saint Thiruvalluvar again explained the drunkard, so brother, when mixed with water in the soil and you are thrown at you, you will get injured from it; Similarly, grapes and rice are not bad in themselves, but if they are mixed with alcohol If consumed, it is harmful to humans.

It worsens health. It has a bad effect on the ability of the person to think. Because of this the family is destroyed. This saint had a profound effect on that alcoholic and he did not drink alcohol from that day.
