इस मूर्ति का कलाकार कौन?

सुकरात के समय की बात है, उस समय उनके शहर में एक प्रदर्शनी लगी हुई थी। प्रदर्शनी में ग्रीक देवता अपोलो की भव्य मूर्ति स्थापित की गई थी। इस मूर्ति को देखने के लिए यूनान के प्रमुख व्यक्ति जिनमें राजा पैरीक्लीज, रानी एस्पेसिया, विद्वान सोफोक्लीज और स्वयं सुकरात वहां आए हुए थे।

मूर्ति इतनी सुंदर थी कि जो भी उसे देखता तो मूर्ति बनाने वाले कलाकार की प्रशंसा जरूर करता। लेकिन जब कलाकार का नाम राजा पैरीक्लीज ने जानना चाहा। तब वहां उपस्थित लोगों में सन्नाटा सा छा गया। सब हैरान थे। इतनी सुंदर मूर्ति बनाने वाला कलाकार कहां गुम था।

राजा के आदेश पर कलाकार को खोजने के लिए काफी मशक्कत की गई। बड़ी ही कोशिश करने के बाद सैनिकों ने कलाकार को खोज निकाला, वह एक अश्वेत रंग का व्यक्ति था और वह गुलाम था। इस गुलाम ने भगवान अपोलो की पवित्र मूर्ति को बनाया था।

दर्शक दीर्घा में कुछ धर्मगुरु भी खड़े हुए थे। वह जोर-जोर से चिल्लाने लगे। यह अनर्थ हो गया है। कोई गुलाम भगवान अपोलो की मूर्ति को कैसे बना सकता है? इसे तो दंड मिलना चाहिए। इसके हाथ शरीर से अलग कर देना चाहिए।

राजा को धर्मगुरुओं की यह बात बिल्कुल भी अच्छी नहीं लगी। उन्होंने कहा, ‘भगवान की इतनी सुंदर मूर्ति बनाने वाले के साथ इतना क्रूर में नहीं हो सकता।’ राजा पैरीक्लीज आगे बड़े और उस अश्वेत गुलाम के दोनों हाथों को पकड़कर उसकी हथेलियों को चूम लिया।

इस तरह चाटूकार धर्मगुरु अपनी बात से तुरंत पलट गए और राजा के न्याय की प्रशंसा करने लगे। इस तरह उस कलावान गुलाम को सम्मानित और गुलामी की दास्तां से हमेशा-हमेशा के लिए मुक्त कर दिया गया।
